History of House Music
In the 1970s, Chicago promoter Robert Williams recruited the legendary Bronx-born Frankie Knuckles to start a club called the Warehouse in Chicago for predominantly Black gay men.
In the early-1980s underground club scene in Chicago is where the term house found a home. Frankie Knuckles, who was eventually crowned the Godfather of House Music, recalled seeing the term in a record store window for the first time between 1980 and 1981.
Celebrating 40 years of House Music – In 1984 Jesse Saunders, American House Music Artist released his hit single, “On & On”, co-written with Vince Lawrence, which was the first house record to be pressed and sold to the public.
